Lockhart is a unique collection of short stories, dusty news articles, local interviews, hundreds of resources, and one-of-a-kind artwork. This creatively presented work centers around the complex (honorable and shameful) character of Samuel R. Lockhart, Fall River’s first leader among the settlers of Northern California. Over one hundred fascinating accounts about the initial movers and shakers in the northeastern corner of California are presented in this historical narrative which passionately presents the good, the bad, and the famous characters during the first twenty years
of Fall River Valley history.
Interesting and untold information about local legendary figures includes stagecoach bandit, Black Bart, General George Crook’s Scout, Richard Pugh, the man who raised and had a major influence on an Ajumawi boy who later become the Native’s headman, Chief Dick of the Pit River Tribe. Atsugewi beauty, Hat Creek Lize, fought like a man, led her people in a daring escape from the reservation and battled the pioneers up and down the north state. Her brother, Shavehead, led a mixed race group of warriors and was known to have killed more settlers than any other person in California before he was
wounded and lost the use of his arm.
Regrettably, history is often burdened by contradictory and inaccurate information, therefore, hundreds of references and cross-references are noted throughout this project. A non-biased, local story of Western expansion is presented to restore and preserve forgotten history. The past isn’t always appealing or what we want it to be. But it is what it is. We either learn from it or we don’t.
THE GOOD, THE BAD, THE SURVIVOR

The complete tale of these three amazing men are revealed in LOCKEDHART as never before. Drawn by Ruth Shannon.
